There are thought to be less than 300,000 chimps in Africa. The UWA is trying to raise more awareness of the benefits of the forest through educational campaigns. This is largely because growing crops for food and to make a living is seen as more beneficial than the forest stopping erosion, buffering temperature and keeping the chimps away. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is said to be aware of the problem but has said it’s finding it impossible to protect private forests and the natural homes of the chimps from destruction. With nowhere to go and a lack of food to eat the chimps are encroaching on human settlements. One of the main factors behind the problem is that a large number of chimps have lost their natural habitats to farming throughout western Uganda. No one knows for sure why the chimps are attacking children but both curiosity and predatory reasons have been blamed. The incident happened near the town of Muhororo back in 2014 but since then attacks on children have continued, resulting in at least three deaths and six more injuries or narrow escapes. The publication reported on an incident from a few years ago involving a chimpanzee who snatched a toddler from his mother, broke off his arm, attacked his head and then ripped his abdomen open and removed his kidneys. National Geographic recently highlighted the ongoing problem. The chimpanzees have been raiding crops, threatening livelihoods and attacking humans.
